About Anybody Can Play
Studies have confirmed that piano lessons
enhance your
child's
brain development. For nearly three decades Anybody Can Play
has sought to make easy-to-use, enjoyable piano lessons available and
affordable for all children (and adults) who wish to learn to play the
piano.
The original Anybody Can Play
curriculum was
built in a studio environment with children of all ages and abilities.
It was then successfully expanded through a nation-wide pre-school
program with a major piano company in the late 80's and used with tens
of thousands of children.
To address the increasing awareness of the importance of
teaching the very young child and to reach many more of them, Anybody
Can Play has developed the Worksheet Piano Lesson Program
which consists of daily sheets for children that methodically teach
them how to play the piano. Each sheet takes only minutes to complete.
After the coloring, cutting, tracing, songs and games are done in a
group setting, the children are able to independently "practice" what
they have learned on a piano or keyboard. The children love their
worksheets and eagerly look forward to their piano lessons and their
independent time at the piano or keyboard. In addition to the
worksheet lessons, Anybody Can Play
has developed the "sprinkling" format - sprinkling little bits of
information multiple times during the day. This format closely
parallels language development and is incredibly easy and fun to use to
teachers or parents. Both formats of these piano/keyboard
lessons can be used
by teachers
and parents with no piano background as well as by piano teachers.
Karla Hastings, the author of the Anybody Can Play Program, is a
conservatory trained pianist with a summa cum laude degree who gave her
musical
debut at the age of three. In addition to the piano she plays
several other

instruments.
Mrs. Hastings has enjoyed the benefits of early musical training
herself and continues her efforts to give these same gifts to as many
children as possible. She introduced her first local lesson
program in the daycare setting in the 1970's before going national with
her program in the 80's.
Mrs. Hastings and her husband have studied many foreign languages and
this has helped her teach children who can speak but not yet
read. She truly teaches the piano as another beautiful
language.
Maria Montessori wrote years ago of the "language window"
which opens wide at age 2, then slowly closes until it is shut at age
10. Now this is referred to as "the Window of Opportunity" - a
time when vast learning can and does take place. When a young
child is taught that playing the piano is
important and enjoyable, that attitude (along with everything else
learned during this critical pre-reading period) remains for
life. Along with all the other benefits of learning to play
the piano (coordination, confidence, enhanced spatial reasoning, etc.)
the
process of conscious
learning is transferred to other learning as well. With these
simple little daily piano lessons we are given the opportunity to
change the lives of children.
The Hastings have five children, two of whom are piano teachers.
Many of Mrs. Hastings' students have pursued careers in music as well.
